While hypnotherapy is most identified with weight loss and smoking cessation, hypnosis has far wider applications such as relaxation as well as disarming the mind’s “fight or flight” response.
Hypnosis is successful for alleviating anxiety, phobias, insomnia, and pain, and promoting memory enhancement, breast enlargement, stress free child birthing, eliminating nail biting, alcohol management, self-confidence, as well as slowing down the signs of aging through positive behaviors.
In Getting Hip to Hypnosis by Susan Yara, published in Forbes Magazine 10/19/05, 12:30 AM ET –Dr. David Speigel and Dr. Tom Nicoli focus on the “How does it Work”…aspect- According to Dr. David Speigel, associate chair of psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine, "Hypnosis puts a person in a trance-like state so that they are more receptive to new suggestion, and better able to control what is happening to the body or see a problem from a new point of view."
Dr. Tom Nicoli, a hypnotist in Woburn, Mass., who conducted about 3,000 weight-loss hypnosis sessions in 2004 alone, says that clients are never actually asleep during the process and that hypnosis only works if the person is a willing participant. "A hypnotist assists someone to do what they already desire, but in a way that's safe and natural and removes the conscious struggle of willpower and force," he says.
While Susan Yara, Dr. David Speigel, and Dr. Tom Nicoli provide a peek into “how hypnotherapy works” ,more and more people are realizing that all hypnosis is self hypnosis -- nothing happens unless you accept and
participate.
Regardless of cultural barriers, all of us use self-hypnosis every day, many times without realizing it. We forget our stresses and strains listening to music, gardening, or reading a good book. And when we forget to judge the moment and simply relax and enjoy it, we are in a “trance-like state.”
So the fact that a scientific explanation is far from the horizon is no indicator of the value of hypnosis. Science is still grappling with mysteries of the brain, indeed the universe. Hopefully, it will not be too long before the traditional Medical and scientific communities endorse what we as practitioners see and innately know – that hypnosis and hypnotherapy are conducive to our well-being.
